Ntdll.dll Error Description

Ntdll.dll errors are normally the result of an unknown hard drive error. When this error occurs your computer may become non-responsive or crash. An error in ntdll.dll often affects Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Explorer, causing your computer to become very slow and difficult to work with.

Listed below are the most common error messages you may be presented if you have an ntdll.dll error:

STOP: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll

STOP: C0000221 unknown hard error Path\File_name

STOP: 0xC0000221 unknown hard errorC:\Winnt\System32\Ntdll.dll (or another specific file or driver)

STOP: 0xC0000221 STATUS_IMAGE_CHECKSUM_MISMATCHPath\File_name

Troubleshooting and Solutions to ntdll.dll Hard Error

Below are listed ways to troubleshoot and resolve issues generating an ntdll.dll error message.

Malfunctioning Hard Drive. Ntdll.dll may also be caused if there is a problem with the cable that connects your hard drive to the motherboard of your computer. To determine if this is the cause of the error try to connect your hard drive to another cable of the same type. Other devices that use the same cables are; CD, DVD and Zip drives.

If this resolves the issue you will need to purchase a new cable for your hard drive to permanently repair the issue.

Faulty Windows Installation. If you are experiencing a ntdll.dll error right after installing Windows, you will need to see if the installation is not damaged. It is possible to complete the installation of Windows using a damaged disc, but it will only complicate things in the future and cause system errors as damaged files will be installed.

Also, if you installed an illegal copy or burned CD for the installation, it increases the chances of ntdll.dll errors so it always recommended to use a genuine copy of Windows during installation.

Outdated or Corrupted Drivers. Often, old and damaged drivers will cause various system errors, therefore it is always important to ensure all hardware devices connected to your computer are running on the latest drivers, it also important that these drivers are compatible with your Operating System and other hardware devices.

The easiest way to do this is by using a driver updater utility: Driver Checker will find the required drivers and install them automatically.

Click here to download Driver Checker

Damaged or Corrupt Registry. You may also experience ntdll.dll if files in your registry become corrupt or missing. To prevent such situations from occurring and keep a healthy and error free computer it is advised to install and perform regular registry maintenance using a registry cleaning tool.

Reggenie offers a free scan you can use to determine if your computer has any system related errors. Click here to download and scan your computer

This error comes from an adware program called My Web Search Toolbar and is usually generated when your antivirus detected the threat but was not able to completely remove the registry keys.

This simply means that the files that the adware needs to operate are gone, but the instructions for Windows to run it every time you boot your computer are still present and active.

This will cause Windows to attempt to run the non-existent m3plugin.dll file and will create an error message similar to the following:

RUNDLL Error Loading C:\PROGRA~\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\M3PLUGIN.DLL the specific module could not found

How to fix this error

We recommend using a registry cleaner to automatically remove the leftover registry keys and also fix other conflicts the adware may have caused. You can download Reggenie and scan your computer for free.

You can also use SpywareCease, to completely remove this adware from your computer.

If you would rather take the manual approach, keep reading for instructions.

How to manually remove My Web Search Toolbar

First of all we need to make sure the My Web Search Toolbar is uninstalled from your computer:

Step 1: Removing the Adware

Click Start, then Control Panel and go to Add/Remove Programs. This brings up a list of installed programs on your computer. Scroll down and look for My Web Search in the list. You may also want to look for other program associated with the Fun Web Products:

My Web Speedbar

Search Assistant

Uninstall any you find, if they are not present proceed to step two.

Step 2: Getting Rid of the Registry Files

Note: This step requires you to access the Windows Registry and is not recommended for insecure computer users, if you are in doubt; download a registry cleaner and have it remove them for you.

In XP click Start, then Run… and type regedit in the dialogue box and press enter, to bring up the run dialogue in Vista/7 click Win+R. You should now be in the Registry Editor, on the left side you will see a navigation pane similar to Explorer. Use it to navigate to the following location:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

and delete the registry keys associated with problem such as:

C:\Progra~1\Mywebs~1\Bar\1.bin\M3plugin.dll

Verify that the Shell key at HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon has a value Explorer.exe only.

Next, go to Edit > Find and do a search for M3PLUGIN.dll and delete all entries related to it, repeat the process for My Web Search. Don’t worry if nothing comes back on the search, this is just to make sure all the registry keys related to the adware is gone.

Step 4: Reboot your computer.

Step 5: Open My Computer and navigate to C:\Program Files and look for a folder called My Web Search and Fun Web Products and delete them. These folders should be gone, but it doesn’t hurt to double check.

My Web Search should now be completely removed along with the error message it generated.

Alternative Hotfix Solution

If the above steps failed, here’s one last solution that will remove the error message. Note that this solution will not remove the registry keys, nor any potential leftover malware, it just tells Windows to not attempt to load the missing file.

Click on Start.

Go to Run. (Win+R in Vista/7)

Enter msconfig in the window that opens.

Press Enter.

Go to the Startup tab.

Look for m3plugin.

Uncheck m3plugin and click Apply.

While adware is generally not harmful to your computer, it can seriously slow down performance and cause issues in the future.

Additionally it spies on your browsing habits and violate your privacy so it is always best to completely remove such intrusions when detected using a trusted antispyware tool, and also remember to practice safe browsing to avoid them in the first place.

Tip: Click here to run a free system scan for M3PLUGIN.dll relates errors.

What is a DLL file and what is it used for?

DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library and are a type of mini programs that are shared by other other programs to execute certain tasks and actions instead of each program having their own individual file.

The biggest benefit of DLL files is their memory serving characteristics: a program only calls upon a DLL file if it is needed to perform a certain task, and when the task is done the DLL file is closed and removed from working memory, significantly saving processing power needed by the program.

Error in Loading DLL

This error occurs when a program calls upon a DLL file to perform a certain task and the specified DLL cannot be loaded. These errors are often indicated by various error messages.

What causes a failure to load a DLL file?

If a DLL fails to load there can be numerous reasons for the error, listed below are the most common.

The DLL file has been moved to a different location and the shortcut used by the program to find it is now broken.

Due to the installation of another program the DLL file has become overwritten with another DLL file the program no longer recognizes the DLL. A similar situation can occur when you uninstall a program and the process deletes a shared DLL file.

Hard disk error have corrupted or damaged a DLL file.

Malware errors that add malicious code to applications, and leftover DLL files from removed malware infections.

Other common issues that trigger DLL errors are spyware and adware infections, hard disk problems and Windows registry problems.

If you are experiencing a DLL error it is recommended you download and use Reggenie.
